The Scariest Movies When I Was A Kid

Since Halloween is in just a few days I thought I would recount the movies that scared me the most when I was a kid.

5. Harry & The Hendersons

I still have nightmares about this guy and they say this movie is a comedy.

4. Wizard of OZ

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I don't remember being scared of this but my sister tells me that whenever the monkeys came on screen I would run away and not finish the movie.

3. The Goonies

Baabbyy Ruuuuth?!?! Why would they put this monster in a kids movie? I always screamed when they revealed his face for the first time in the movie.

2. Ghostbusters 2

This painting is soooo frightening. The first ghostbusters was a fun ghost movie but the sequel terrified me when I was little.

1. Ernest Scared Stupid

After I saw this movie I wouldn't look under my bed for months. Not because I was scared that the troll would be there but I was scared that he would be in the bed with me after I was done looking.

Gran Torino Review

Great Movie. I thought this was going to be a serious drama but it turned out to be a hilarious comedy. Clint spits out so many racial slurs you'll be throwing up from laughing so hard. It also helps that he's a bad ass who's pushing on 90. Go rent this movie right away!

Y: The Last Man

Y the Last Man
This series really blew me away with how much it felt like I was watching a a really good TV show. This is not like your usual comic series because it is one continous story. The main plot revolves around a mysterious plague that suddenly kills all the men in the world except for Yorick Brown.

What ensues is Yorick's crazy journey around the world looking for his fiance and trying to find out why he is the last man on earth. All the while he has to avoid women trying to have sex with him and other women trying to kill him off.

If you're a fan of cool premises and you like reading comics that are really good then go out and buy all ten volumes now.

Dexter Season 1 Review

Dexter DVD coverDexter is one of those shows that you just have to tell everyone you know to watch it. I think what makes it appeal to a lot of people is the fact that the main character is one of the bad guys. Dexter works for the Miami Police Department as a forensic blood splatter specialist and he is also serial killer.

The line between good and evil is often blurred because Dexter only kills bad guys who deserve it. This makes for a interesting show, one in which the audience is rooting for the killer.

Michael C Hall does an incredible job as Dexter and overshadows the whole supporting cast. Most of the other actors play typical "cop" roles but don't worry because they really get good in later seasons.

Definitely check this show out if like good television.

Spotlight on Jo Chen

Jo Chen is an incredible artist who is most famous for doing the covers for Buffy Season 8. In my opinion, she is the reason why Buffy became a successful comic series. She has a unique talent of capturing what the actress really looks like. I wish I could say the same for the interior artist for Buffy. Most of the time I can't tell which character is which. Chen also did a long run on Runaways producing a lot of beautiful covers.

Fast and Furious (2009) Review

This is the fourth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise. I enjoyed the first movie and skipped the rest because they looked terrible. When this was announced I was surprised for two reasons. 1) They are using the same title from the first movie but dropping "the". 2) The whole cast from the first movie is returning. This blew my mind because I couldn't believe they all agreed to come back for the 4th movie in the franchise. I guess they didn't really have anything else going on. So this new movie is pretty bad. No surprise there. It has cars and Vin Diesel but that's about it. What the movie is missing is the sense of family. The main characters barely share any screen time together and when they do its not any good. I don't want to waste anymore of your time talking about this movie so the bottom line is stay away unless you really like the franchise.

Blood of the Fold Review

Check out my other reviews on the first two books in the series.

Wizard's First Rule
Stone of Tears

This is the 3rd book in the Sword of Truth series and the worst so far. This is also the shortest, by almost 200 pages. The main fault of the the book is the enemy. No more Darken Rahl but instead we get the Blood of the Fold. The second book hypes them up as this powerful force but I can't find the difference between them and the Imperial Order. They both want to rid the world of magic and Richard. I didn't find them scary at all and Goodkind would go back and forth between them and Richard's story. That is the second fault of the book, Goodkind likes to switch the point of view from the main character to a boring minor character that will only be in one book. I really wanted to like this book but in the end I wish I hadn't read it at all. I really hope that Goodkind can go back to what made his first two books so good.

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam Review

Zeta Gundam Logo
I was very excited to see Zeta Gundam after watching the first Mobile Suit Gundam series. I was interested to see what they do since the timeline was advancing a few years. It seems like they wanted to recreate what happened before by having a new kid pilot a gundam. I guess the same formula works but I wouldn't want to see this for every series. I didn't really like Kamina, the new main character, because he is such a pussy and not a very good leader. Kamina is pretty retarded but they really screwed up my favorite character from the first series, Char. They now have him as a good guy but with a different name. He wears sunglasses the whole time so you arent sure if it's really Char until later in the series.

Now the worst part of the show is the storyline. Its incredibly confusing and so many different things are happening that you aren't sure who the good guys are and who the bad guys are. I'm actually surprised I was able to make it through all the episodes. They are all so boring and you really don't care about any of the characters because they are way too many.

Zeta Gundam Kamina slap

The only reason why this show might be worth watching is for a drinking game. Kamina gets slapped by every character in the show multiple times. Some episodes have him getting slapped more than 5 times in one 20-minute episode. Im sure you would be able to come up with some more rules to make a pretty darn good drinking game. I would not recommend watching this show if you like to watch good anime. I recommend watch something like Evangelion if you want a good Mecha series.

Spotlight on Dustin Nguyen

Dustin Nguyen Batman ComicsDustin Nguyen is a great comic book artist who has done some amazing covers for Batman. He has also done a lot of penciling which is just as good as his covers. What I like best about Dustin is that he does a lot of art including a variety of characters. For example, my favorite cover to the right is about the Mad Hatter and Alice in Wonderland. The one below is a collage of redheads in comics. As of right now, Dustin is doing the covers and pencils for the new Streets of Gotham series. Paul Dini is the writer so go check it out for two of the best comic book professionals in the business.

Wizard of OZ #8

Wizard of OZ comicThis is the last issue of the great Wizard of Oz miniseries. The gang travels to the Witch, Glinda, so she can send Dorothy back home. They make quick stops through China country and the the Hammerheads on their way to Glinda's castle. The writer packs a lot into this issue and I wish we could have seen more of the China people. This issue was a great end to an incredible series. The best part is that the writer and artist are continuing with another miniseries called The Marvelous Land of OZ.

Lost Season 2 Review

lost tv

----------Warning Spoilers Ahead-----------

Read my review of Season 1 if you haven't watched it yet.

Season 2 of Lost focuses on the hatch that was discovered in Season 1. The first episode reveals that a man lives down in the hatch which is filled with all the normalcy of life off of the island. It's also revealed that the hatch is a station that "saves" the world.

If you thought that the cast of Lost was huge then get ready because there are survivors from the tail section of the plane. An episode actually shows what happened to the tail section survivors for the first 48 days. I thought that it was a clever way to get the audience invested in these new characters by showing how they struggled even more than the other castaways.

Another new character is Henry Gale. (I love the Wizard of Oz reference) He got to the island from a hot air balloon and got caught in a net trap. The castaways immediately think that he is lying and that he is an "Other". So they put Henry in the hatch as a prisoner until they figure out what to do with him. One of the big reveals of the season is that Henry Gale is actually Ben, who is the leader of the "Others". The other big surprise is Michael coming back to lead Jack, Kate, and Sawyer into a trap so he can get his son back.

lost others
This season was really great. It didn't lose any steam from the first season and all the new characters added a lot to the story. One problem with Lost is that they produce so many mysteries and don't get around to explaining any of them. This season adds even more secrets that will probably never be revealed but I guess that is also the fun of the show. They leave some stuff up for the audience to interpret.

My favorite part of this season has to be Michael Emerson who plays Henry Gale/Ben. He really raises the bar for the acting on the show. I still think Season 1 is my favorite but this comes close. I just loved the unraveling mystery of the hatch.

Punisher: War Zone Review

Punisher War ZoneForget what you've heard, this is the Punisher movie you've been waiting for. Nevermind that Thomas Jane bullshit you saw a few years back. Get ready for some nonstop action and carnage. Punisher is a simple man, his family was killed by the mob and he wants revenge. Ray Stevenson plays Frank Castle but he really is Frank Castle. They somehow pulled the image I had of Punisher from my mind and put it on the big screen. Let me warn you that the movie doesn't take itself too seriously so get ready to have some laughs. My only problem with the movie was the villain, Jigsaw. Even though his make up looked great, his accent was terrible. Other than that the movie was a lot of fun so gather around your friends and get ready for a wild ride.

Actor Patrick Swayze Dies at 57

Patrick Swayze

(1952 - 2009)

It saddens me to say that Patrick Swayze has passed away today due to pancreatic cancer. He made it known publicly that he had been battling the cancer for almost two years. He even continued working on his show "The Beast" without the aid of painkillers. Mr. Swayze made two of my favorite awesomely bad movies, Road House and Point Break. These movies weren't that great but they are so much fun to watch and Swayze is the best part. He also did a little known movie called Ghost with Demi Moore which was nominated for a best picture Oscar. Don't forget about his awesome cameo in Donnie Darko. In his honor, I urge you all to go rent some of your favorite Swayze movies and run a marathon.

Inglourious Basterds Review

The WWII Tarantino flick has finally arrived and I can tell you that killin Nazis has never been better. I have been eagerly awaiting for Tarantino to do his war movie and I was not disappointed. The plot of the movie is simple, a group of Jewish soldiers go behind enemy lines to kill as many Nazis as possible. I went in to the theater expecting an epic action movie but instead I got a war movie full of suspense and I couldn't be more happier. Tarantino crafted scenes putting you on the edge of you seat, wondering how the character is going to get out of a situation.

Brad Pitt starts as Aldo Raine, the leader of the Basterds. Everything that Pitt says is hilarious and is definitely one of my favorite characters that Brad Pitt has ever played. For my top 5 Brad Pitt characters go here.
Brad Pitt actually gets the spotlight taken from him by Col. Hans Landa, played by Christoph Waltz. I couldn't believe how fun it was to watch this guy on screen. He definitely deserves an Oscar for his portrayal and I hope we get to see more of this German actor in the US. If you love Tarantino's trademark dialogue and a lot of bloody violence then catch this movie in the theaters before it goes away.

Top 5 Best Brad Pitt Characters

Since Inglourious Basterds was released (review is coming), I thought it would be fun to rank the best of Brad Pitt's characters.:

5. John Smith (Mr. and Mrs. Smith)

mrsmithbradpitt

Mr. Smith from Mr. and Mrs. Smith definitely deserves a spot on the list. Seeing him beat the crap out of Angelina Jolie and then having rough sex is a fantasy for anyone with genitals.

4. Louis de Ponte Du Lac (Interview with the Vampire)

bradpittvampire

The best vampire of any movie period.

3. Rusty Ryan (Ocean's 11, 12, 13)

bradpittoceans11

Crazy Mustache + Brad Pitt = Win

2. Tyler Durden (Fight Club)

bradpittfightclub

Watching Brad Pitt as Tyler Durden is like drinking a fine wine. Then you smash the bottle over your head and let the blood run down your face while you grit your teeth.

1. Lt Aldo Raine (Inglourious Basterds)

bradpittinglouriousbasterds

Bonjourno! I still can't believe how awesome he is in Inglourious Basterds. He plays one of the funniest characters I've ever seen because everything out of his mouth is instant gold. "You see, we're in the business of killin' Nazis, and boy, business is boomin'. "
